Then...The Victoria Hotel, also known as the Wilson-Darby Block, after the entrepreneurs who built it, was designed by architect Thomas Hooper and built in 1892. Considered to be one of the city's first-rate hotels, it had 78 large and airy rooms heated by steam, and containing baths, electric bells, and other conveniences; the $2.00 per day room rate was considered very reasonable. There were a number of shop-fronts on the street that attracted businesses tenants separate from the Hotel, which was no longer listed in the block by 1921. McLennan, McFeely & Prior Limited, popularly known as “Mc & Mc", was the biggest hardware firm in BC for several decades, from the 1930s until sold to Acklands in the mid-1960s. Its roots go back to 1859, and the products that they sold were extremely important to farmers and to the building trades or 100 years in Victoria.
